The 996 was introduced to the world at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1997. It was a total redesign of the 911 concept with a completely new body shell, and for the first time a water-cooled 6 cylinder horizontally opposed ‘boxer’ engine. This radical departure from the original air-cooled engines was met with some trepidation from die-hard Porsche fans. However, the upsides were huge with much more interior space and the ability to function as both GT and sports car simultaneously.

Supplied in Meridian Silver with a Classic Grey Leather interior and 6 speed manual transmission, this 996 really is a lovely thing. This second-generation example has covered a mere 62,784 miles since first being registered back in September 2001 which equates to an average of just over 3,000 miles a year. Despite the low mileage covered on this example, anyone in the know (or with access to Google) will be able to reveal the anciles heel of non GT/Turbo 996 models, the three little letters “I M S”. The intermediate shaft bearing on Carrera models is a known weak-spot in an otherwise robust mechanical package. Without prior indication or warning this component can fail causing irreversible and significant damage to the engine.

As a preventative measure, our Porsche trained technicians here at JZM have upgraded the standard bearing to a direct engine oil fed bearing kit. This provides the bearing with high pressure engine oil at all times throughout the rev range, therefore totally eliminating the potential failure. Furthermore, this example has also been treated to fresh service, fitment of a Dansk Sports Exhaust System, all 4 wheels have been refurbished and now wear a brand new set of Michelin tyres. Aligned with our 12-month JZM warranty, this should provide the next custodian with total peace of mind.
