The Porsche 718 Cayman has been named ‘Best Sports and Performance Car under £50,000’ on sale in the UK at the annual What Car? Car of the Year Awards held in London last night.
The fourth generation of the renowned mid-engined, two-seater sports coupé maintains its focus on driving enjoyment, and combines purposeful design and athletic chassis tuning with powerful flat-four cylinder turbocharged ‘boxer’ engines delivering upwards of 300 hp.
Since its debut in 2005, the Porsche Cayman has earned a particular reputation as a driver’s car among owners and fans alike, and the latest 718 Cayman continues to set the benchmark for driving performance in its class. This latest recognition by UK monthly motoring magazine, What Car?, is a further endorsement of this status.
Following extensive assessment by the car testing experts at the magazine that led to a final short-list, the judging panel of What Car? journalists commented; “Porsche’s decision to cut the Cayman’s engine from six to four cylinders caused a few nervous faces, but they needn’t have worried. It remains exceptional to drive and superbly composed at speed.”
Alexander Pollich, Managing Director, Porsche Cars GB, said; “This Award underlines the strong fan-base the 718 Cayman enjoys among driving enthusiasts. The responsive handling and increased power of the new turbocharged 718 models demonstrate the ongoing commitment of our engineers in Weissach to maintaining this reputation.”
Like the 718 Boxster, the new 718 Cayman models continue the tradition of the Porsche 718 mid-engined sports cars that won numerous races in the 1950s and 1960s, powered by four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engines.
The 718 Cayman costs from £42,897 RRP inc VAT and is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine with a turbocharger developing 300 hp (220 kW). This represents a 25 hp power increase compared to the prior models.
The Cayman S costs from £51,853 RRP inc VAT, and offers a 2.5-litre, four cylinder ‘boxer’ engine with its power boosted to 350 hp by a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. The top Cayman model is the 365 hp GTS, priced from £59,866 RRP inc VAT.
