Choked Porsche Panamera Intake: Get Some Nuts

This poor-running Porsche Panamera was the first service car to benefit from our latest investment in workshop equipment: a mobile Nederman dustless media blaster. Arriving in the JZM Porsche service workshop with terrible running and a string of fault lights showing, a PIWIS check directed our diagnosis towards the intake. Stripping the intake manifold from the engine, we soon found the valves to be clogged almost solid, following a life sitting mainly in London traffic.

The only way to fix this problem would normally be to strip and clean the heads and valve train – quite an expensive process. We could have used our high-power blast cabinet to great effect but would still have had to strip the heads off. Talking to our equipment suppliers, we came across the dustless Nederman system, using crushed walnut shells.

Turning the engine to top dead centre on one cylinder so the valves are closed, the machine blasts the backs of the valves with walnut shell media, simultaneously removing waste products. The shells are combustible, so any small fragment which manages to find its way into the combustion chamber will just be burned off without damaging the engine. The results were terrific and we will find many more uses for the new blaster!

Akrapovic upgrade exhaust for Porsche 991.2 Carrera (Turbo)

JZM is delighted to be the first UK supplier of the all-new Akrapovic exhaust system for Gen 2 991 Carrera models. Designed to replace the factory sports exhaust, the new Akrapovic system for the now turbocharged Carreras is manufactured from ultra-lightweight, heat-resistant titanium alloys, which have been coated for increased durability.

Part of Akrapovic’s highly regarded ‘Slip-On’ line, the system tops the scales at two-thirds the weight of a standard exhaust. Thanks to much improved gas flow through the exhaust’s central silencer and out through titanium tailpipes, performance is greatly enhanced over standard. Buyers also have the option of a stainless steel link pipe set, complete with sports catalytic converters and a stunning carbon-fibre diffuser.

Delivering less weight, more performance and increased visual impact, the new Akrapovic system is a perfect addition to our range of high end tuning products for Porsche models. Email Steve McHale to discuss any of our Porsche tuning products or visit the JZM Porsche tuning shop.

KW Suspension for classic Porsche 911 SC

We’ve just fitted KW Suspension’s latest V3 kit for impact bumper 911s to this 1979 Porsche 911 SC. The conversion from standard Bilstein struts and rear dampers to the adjustable KW kit was very straightforward. We also took the opportunity to change the rear spring plates complete with suspension bushes and covers as the originals were in a pretty bad state.

Our photos show just how much wear the spring plate bushes had endured since 1979: almost forty years ago! Such wear is common on an old Porsche and causes big changes in suspension geometry under acceleration and braking. Sudden geo changes are the root cause of the dangerous rear-steer characteristics found in many older 911s. Suspension bushes deserve careful inspection every service and replacement when worn.

KW’s latest suspension kit is one of two full kits suitable for the impact bumper 911s. The kit fitted to this Porsche 911 SC uses the original torsion bar setup, while the track-friendly Clubsport kit does away with the torsion bars and goes to full coilover suspension. This would be overkill for purely road-use 911s. The V3 kit with its galvanised steel body and adjustable rebound and compression certainly impressed our very own tame racing driver on road test, following a full 4-wheel alignment once the new dampers had been fitted.

“The new KW suspension feels great on this classic 911,” said JZM Technical Director, Steve McHale. “Not too stiff but solid on the road. By replacing the old parts with modern KW dampers, the car feels planted and confident. This kit is the perfect upgrade for cars with older, worn-out dampers, especially when the suspension bushes may also be in need of replacement.”

Email JZM Parts to discuss fitting details and prices for the V3 kit for impact-bumper 911s including the Porsche 911 SC, Carrera 3.2 and 930 Turbo models.

JZM Porsche Pre-Purchase Inspection Service

It’s a big mistake to buy any Porsche without first inspecting it thoroughly, to be assured of proper condition. That’s why you should talk to JZM Porsche about our PPI service (pre-purchase inspection).

JZM Porsche Pre-Purchase Inspections

We carry out many pre-purchase inspections for prospective Porsche buyers every year. Inspection is reasonably priced at standard workshop rates. Cars can be brought to our workshop, where the inspection will be completed by a trained JZM technician while you wait. The technican will compile a report and discuss his findings with you afterwards. The results will either confirm the car as a good one or offer some areas for improvement, which could be a help in price negotiations.

In the most extreme cases, we may advise against purchase, but the final decision rests with the buyer. Whatever happens, you will have the best information at your disposal, to help with the decision and avoid losing money on a bad car. Email the JZM Porsche service department to enquire about our Porsche pre-purchase inspections or call us on 01923 269788.
